Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, Fences follows a working-class African-American father as he struggles with the constraints of poverty, racism, and his own inner demons as he tries to raise a family. Directed by Denzel Washington, and starring Washington and Viola Davis, the film is based on a play by the esteemed African American playwright August Wilson. Wilson was known as the "theater's poet of Black America," and his plays chronicle the experiences and heritage of the African-American community in the 20th century. Fences was nominated for four Academy Awards in 2017, including Best Picture, and won Viola Davis an award for Best Supporting Actress.
