The recent suspension of funding by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has sent shockwaves through the global humanitarian community, disrupting essential services and endangering vulnerable populations. As an organization committed to embodying the Gospel's call to serve "the least of these" (Matthew 25:40), PWRDF / Alongside Hope, recognizes the profound implications of this development.
USAID has been a cornerstone of international aid, providing approximately $40 billion annually, which constitutes nearly 40% of global humanitarian and development assistance. The abrupt halt in funding has led to the suspension of critical programs worldwide, including health services, education, and food security initiatives. Faith-based organizations, many of which rely on USAID support, are facing difficult decisions about which life-saving programs to continue.
PWRDF / Alongside Hope's mission aligns closely with many initiatives previously supported by USAID, particularly in areas such as health care, food security, and community development. The funding freeze threatens to exacerbate challenges in these sectors, potentially reversing years of progress in improving health outcomes, reducing poverty, and promoting sustainable development.
In response to this crisis, PWRDF / Alongside Hope is intensifying its advocacy and collaborative efforts through the ACT Alliance, a global coalition of 143 churches and faith-based organizations dedicated to humanitarian assistance, development, and advocacy. Together, we are urging the U.S. administration to reconsider the suspension, highlighting the life-threatening consequences for millions who depend on these programs.
Moreover, PWRDF/ Alongside Hope is working with partners within the ACT Alliance to identify alternative funding sources and implement strategies to mitigate the impact of the funding gap. This includes mobilizing resources from other international donors, increasing engagement with private sector partners, and encouraging individual contributions to sustain essential services.
Our response is deeply rooted in the Gospel message of love, compassion, and justice. We are reminded of Jesus' teaching: "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me" (Matthew 25:40). This call compels us to stand in solidarity with those affected by the funding suspension and to advocate tirelessly on their behalf.
Please pray for this work, as we uphold the dignity of those we serve and continue to bring hope to communities in need. In these uncertain times, PWRDF / Alongside Hope remains steadfast in its commitment to walking alongside hope, guided by faith and a shared vision of a just, healthy, and peaceful world.
