Bruce Weaver, a retired elementary school teacher and his wife of 57 years, have lived in Guelph since 1983. Bruce taught in Ontario, Nunavut and the North West Territories before returning to Peel District. He has been active in indigenous circles since his discovery of his native heritage about 15 years ago. He is a status Indian under the Indian Act and a member of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte at Tyendinaga. He is a fire keeper for the community and is a member of Seven Generations Forward. Bruce served as a community member on the President’s Advisory Circle on Anti-Racism at the University of Guelph. As well he worked with the Guelph Public Library to develop stronger relations with the local indigenous community. He was a member of a city of Guelph community group, developing a community plan with emphasis on reconciliation and inclusivity. For the last 9 years, Bruce has facilitated the Kairos Blanket Exercise with local school boards, Faith groups, the University of Guelph Ryerson University and several Community Colleges. Bruce was a member of the Indigenous Advisory Circle for the Wellington Catholic School Board and a regular guest in grade 11 World Religion and grade 12 Law courses in the 3 high schools. He is also working in the Anglican Diocese of Niagara as a Blanket Exercise facilitator and preaching about reconciliation in local churches. His most recent project is working with Urban Park Guelph to turn a former reformatory into a National Urban Park.
